Great tips. Delegating is such a valuable tool because it not only makes things run more smoothly in the workplace but also because it makes our own work lives easier. Savvy leaders understand that when they encourage their employees to be independent and make decisions on their own they are helping them grow. When employees feel like they can take anything on and won't be second guessed or micromanaged there's no limit to what they can do.

One of the most important management tools. In fact, delegation is indeed one of the "truly managerial parts of my own job".

Good article Ian - I got a lot out of it! I think we sometimes wish we could delegate more to have more time for our real value adding work, but I know for me the biggest hurdle is my perception of the time it will take to delegate the task. Note I said perception, because if you can commit the time to delegate properly, it rewards you with so much more time!

I think the secret to delegation is: "Tell them either what to do, or how to do it, but never both".
